Silhouette: How to Fix Low Resolution Error in Silhouette
The Problem:
Have you ever tried importing a PNG image with a transparent background into Silhouette studio, only to get a low resolution error? Most of the times, the solution is to increase the DPI to 300 or more.
But what if you already have a high quality PNG and are still getting the dreaded, low-resolution error?
Unfortunately, this is a bug in the Silhouette software. But, fear not! There is a working solution.
300 DPI is Not Enough
To avoid the low resolution issue, your file needs to be at least 300 dpi resolution. Anything less, and you’re going to be printing blurry or pixelated images. For most, this should fix the low resolution error.
But, what about when you already have a high quality image, and the low resolution, yellow triangle of sadness is calling you a liar?
Fortunately, the issue isn’t with all PNG images. The error arises for PNG images with transparent backgrounds only, and has been an issue for years. That’s right, folks, YEARS. Are you reading this, Silhouette?
Autotrace for PNG Images
If you are importing a PNG image with a transparent background, chances are you are using the Autotrace feature. It’s a lovely function and saves a ton of time. For every image you import with a transparent background, Silhouette will trace your artwork for you! How wonderful is that?
Not so wonderful.
It’s actually the root cause of the low-resolution error that you’ve been getting.
The Solution:
If you have tried uploading a high quality PNG image with a transparent background, yet are still receiving a low-resolution warning, follow these simple steps:
- Check that your image is at least 300 dpi resolution.
- Turn off Autotrace:
- Go to Edit > Preferences
- Click on the Import icon
- Uncheck Autotrace
There you have it folks! A simple solution to an annoying problem. Unfortunately, you will need to trace your images manually, but at least your high quality artwork, will still look good.
Happy designing!
